BPH
  Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia – a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that may cause symptoms
   
Catheter
  A tube that may be placed temporarily after the PVP through the penis to allow the bladder to drain overnight.
     
Cystoscope
  The small telescope used to visualise the prostate and bladder.
   
Flow-rate
  An investigation involving passing water into a machine to show the power of the stream and also the pattern of urination. This helps in the diagnosis of BPH
   
Glycine
  The irrigation fluid needed to perform a TURP. It can be dangerour if absorped in alreg quanities and is replaced by Normal saline for the PVP.
   
Greenlight™
  The laser used to perform the PVP. It produces light in the visible range that is selectively absorbed by the colour red.
   
Irrigation fluid
  Fluid used to aid vision during prostatectomy. It is run through the cystoscope to remove bubbles and any bleeding.
   
IPSS
  The International Prostate Symptom Score. A useful questionnaire for assessing how bad symptoms are. It can range from 0 (no symptoms) to 35 (very severe symptoms).
   
Normal saline
  Salt water at the same concentration as the fluids found in the blood. A very safe irrigation fluid.
   
Prostate
  A gland situated below the bladder and surrounding the urethra. Its function is to provide the bulk of the seminal fluid.
   
PSA
  Prostate Specific Antigen is an enzyme secreted by the prostate. Its function is to help the seminal fluid become very liquid enabling sperm to swim easier. It can be found to be raised on a blood test for many reasons one of which is cancer of the prostate. Whilst not a terribly accurate test, if it is raised then cancer must be ruled out.
   
PVP
  Photoselective Vaporisation of the Prostate. The operation to remove prostate tissue using the Greenlight laser
   
Residual volume
  The amount of urine left in the bladder after urination. Usually this is a very small volume.
   
Urethra
  The outflow pipe from the bladder running through the penis.
